It seems like only yesterday that I was bringing my little bundle of joy home from the hospital. And now he’s four! Time can really get away on you if you’re not careful. That’s why it’s so important to capture as many moments as possible. For your viewing pleasure, I captured some special shots of Connor’s 4th birthday party at Uncle D & Aunt J’s house.
The other day I asked my boy if he wanted to go skating with me. I thought we could practice some of his new moves. He’s awesome at standing up all by himself on his skates. I thought he’d be excited to go, but I was wrong. His response was, “No, I am staying here.” Oh, okay, well I guess I’ll see you later then! He was happy and having fun playing with the guys and his Thomas trains on the floor in the living room. So, ‘here’ we stayed.
Another moment of independence surfaced at shower time on Tuesday night. Usually, I get the water going and the temperature just right, climb in to the shower myself and Connor joins me. The normal routine was blown apart when he announced that he was going to have a shower by himself. I turned on the water, adjusted the temperature for him, then was instructed to go to the kitchen. I stayed long enough to lean in and wash and rinse his hair. He did the rest. Typically when the shower is over, Connor likes to climb out and curl up in a ball on the bathmat with his towel covering him entirely. This time when he came out he didn’t want to be Harold the turtle – he wanted a toga. When he was all wrapped up in his toga he carefully marched out to the living room to do a little more playing before putting on jamamas. He was very proud of himself. I felt a little lost, but was proud of him too.
When Connor started at the North Perth Daycare Centre in Listowel, he was in the youngest group of children. He was a ‘Butterfly’. This summer, about two weeks before school started in September, Connor was moved up to the intermediate group. He is now a ‘Firefly’. He loved being a Butterfly, but being a Firefly is even more fun. Every morning as we drive up to the daycare he yells out, “SCHOOL!!”. It’s very exciting! As a Butterfly he would go right into his classroom when he arrived. Now as a Firefly, when he arrives at ’school’ he goes directly outside to play with his friends.
When this big advancement occurred, Grandpa wanted to know if these ‘flies’ had naps in the afternoon. They do. And occasionally Connor will too. He’s had to have more than a few reminders to be quiet in the sleep room, but I think it’s starting to sink in. When I ask him what the sleep room rule is, he replies, “No talking.” in a very solemn voice.
Was there ever really any doubt? It was only the Sea Turtle level, but I’m his mom so I’m proud anyway!
Yesterday’s lesson went very well. It seems he didn’t forget anything after being away for Thursday, Friday and the weekend. Today was not so great. He was a cold, shivering, blue-lipped little boy who just wanted his towel. (and his Mommy) It’s too funny really because the moment I have him wrapped up in his towel and we start getting clean dry clothes on, he perks right up. When he left the changeroom after dressing he told Julie, his instructor, that he was sorry for crying.
He was thrilled to receive his progress booklet with a sticker of a sea turtle to indicate that he had passed.
The comments on the page say: “Great swimming Connor! Your bubbles are excellent! Keep practicing your floats for next year. Have a great summer!!” Julie
In case you haven’t guessed, the next level is Salamander. Julie suggested that we wait until next year to sign him up for that level because it involves being able to do floats on your own and to willingly go under water. We have a lot of practicing to do before we’re at that point. Our holidays start this Friday night, so if the weather cooperates we’ll be able to practice next week.
I’m thinking we’ll go to Wiarton for a few days. The town pool there is always warm and never busy. All we’ll need is a little sunshine.
