Early in September I received a notice that pictures were going to be taken at school. Of course I was all over that idea – you can never have enough pictures! I filled out the form and submitted it along with the specified fee of $12. I assumed I’d be getting the typical individual pose and the standard whole class picture. The proofs that came back were a wonderful surprise. The photographer took about six poses of each child and they weren’t in front of an ugly cloth backdrop. Connor’s picture was taken outside with him sitting on one of the bikes. Very fitting, since that is something he loves to do. The group picture was also taken outside in the covered play area. Choosing just one pose wasn’t easy – they were all great. When the pictures came back they were done like a page in a scrapbook.
This is a scan, so the quality leaves a lot to be desired. I love how natural Connor appears. If you look very closely at the class picture, you can see him saying cheese!
Independence – Is it a good thing or a bad thing?
One morning last week Connor woke up and asked if he could go downstairs. I told him sure and that I’d be down shortly. I was still upstairs a few minutes later when I heard Connor yelling, “Mommy, come down here!”. I trotted down the stairs and found him in the kitchen. To my amazement, he had two muffins (that he’d dug out of the freezer) unwrapped and ready to go, his chair strategically placed in front of the microwave, and he was trying very hard to open the microwave door. Yikes! I finished the process for him. There’s no doubt in my mind that had he been able to open that door, he would have gone ahead and started pushing buttons too. I don’t think I’m ready for that level of independence yet – too many what if’s. On the other hand, if I show him the right buttons to push on the microwave, stove and barbeque maybe we’d have some better meals around here. Naaaaa, better give him a couple more months. Time for a chat about not cooking without Mommy there to help!
Halloween gets more exciting with each passing year. We haven’t evolved to the point of major decorating like spreading cobwebs across the front porch yet (maybe next year), but Connor was certainly more aware of what it was all about.
Connor, Grandma and I made sugar cookies in the shapes of pumpkins and ghosts for sharing at Connor’s school Halloween party.
Pumpkins seemed to throw Connor off a bit. He was having a bit of a love/hate relationship with them. Some days he’d want to pick them up and other days he didn’t even want to see them. We had many conversations about carving them and putting a candle inside, but he didn’t want to carve a ’sooky’ face. To keep the peace, we opted not to carve and simply left them on the front steps.
Anyone who has been reading this blog knows that Connor’s favorite movie is ‘Cars’ and that playing with the guys is one of his favorite pastimes. It should come as no surprise then that this year’s costume continued the theme. Yes, I cheated and went the store-bought route, but Connor loved it. He was part of Lightning McQueen’s pit crew!
We went to about six houses on our block before driving out to Grandma Velma and Grandpa Ron’s for a little visit. He was a very polite trick or treater, saying “Happy Halloween!”, “Trick or Treat!” and “Thank You”.
Dressing up in his costume was the highlight for Connor. Although he overindulged a bit at the school party, he completely forgot about the treats he received from neighbors and friends. Good for him, bad for me!
We, meaning Connor, started skating lessons three weeks ago! He is absolutely loving it. Connor calls it ’sating’. Just like school is ’sool’ and skunk is ’sunk’. Does anyone else see a pattern here? Anyway, every Monday night from 6:20 to 6:50 he hits the ice.
